The idea of truth within a belief will be the subject of the first presentation of the Philosophy Colloquium Series at Illinois State University this fall.
Assistant Professor of Philosophy Neil Sinhababu of the National University of Singapore will speak at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, in 401A Stevenson Hall. All faculty and staff are invited.
In his talk, The Gap Between Thought and Ought, Sinhababu will discuss the philosophical concept of “transparency,” or being fully aware of a truth or fact. He plans to respond to studies by fellow scholars, and argue that “a view on which the norm is synthetic rather than analytical better explains why we regard holders of deviant epistemic norms as substantively mistaken rather than incoherent.”
A specialist in ethics and metaethics, with an emphasis on Friedrich Nietzsche, Sinhababu’s work has been published in journals such as Philosophical Review and Pacific Philosophical Quarterly. Winner of a Woodrow Wilson Foundation fellowship, Sinhababu has also made presentations at universities around the nation as well as Oxford University in England.
For additional information about the colloquium, contact the Philosophy department at 438-7665, or email Crystal Scheiman.
