Professor of Psychology John Pryor will give the University’s Distinguished Professor Lecture at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the Prairie Room of Bone Student Center. The title of his lecture is Scientific Studies of Social Stigma.
Pryor, who joined the faculty at Illinois State in 1985, teaches courses on human sexuality and social psychology. He was named the Outstanding College Researcher at Illinois State, Arts and Sciences Lecturer and Outstanding University Researcher. Pryor’s research on sexual harassment in the military has received grant funding from the U. S. Navy/American Society for Engineering Education and the Department of Veterans Affairs. His equally successful exploration of the reactions to AIDS patients and education initiatives on AIDS has been funded by grants from the National Centers for Disease Control, Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities and the AED/Ford Foundation.
Pryor’s work has appeared in many scholarly journals, such as the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology; Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin; AIDS; AIDS and Behavior; AIDS Education and Prevention; the Journal of Psychiatric Research; Military Medicine; Psychology, Health, & Medicine; and Sex Roles.
A member of the editorial boards of Basic and Applied Social Psychology (BASP), Psychological Inquiry and Sex Roles, Pryor was also a guest co-editor of BASP’s special issue on sexual harassment. Along with A. E. R. Bos, he is currently co-editing another special BASP issue on social stigma.
With more than 100 presentations and invited addresses to his name, Pryor has been called upon to speak around the globe, including the International Congress of Psychology in Stockholm, Sweden; the European Association for Experimental Social Psychology in San Sebastian, Spain; the American Psychiatric Association meetings in Ontario, Canada; the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology in Wuerzburg, Germany; the International AIDS Conference in Toronto, Canada; the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology meetings in Opatija, Croatia; and the European Health Psychology Society Conference in Pisa, Italy.
A member of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, Pryor is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the Midwestern Psychological Association and the Society for Experimental Social Psychology.
