Author Karen Griep Heilbrun will discuss her book on Bloomington philanthropist and social activist Hazle Buck Ewing on Tuesday, July 19, at 1:30 p.m. at Ewing Manor, located on the corner of Towanda Avenue and Emerson Street in Bloomington. The event, sponsored by the Illinois State University Foundation and Milner Library, is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the presentation.
Griep is the author of Hazle Buck Ewing: Promoter of Peace on Earth and Good Will toward Men. The book chronicles the life of the prominent Bloomington resident who championed a variety of causes including education, women’s suffrage, the environment and cross-cultural understanding. Ewing (1880-1969) willed her Bloomington estate to the Illinois State University Foundation for use as a cultural center.
Griep began studying and writing about Ewing during her education at Principia College in Elsah, Ill. Principia College’s School of Nations for international study was founded through Ewing’s philanthropic support.
