The Visual Culture Colloquium in the School of Art will feature “Horror Returns: Censorship, Aesthetics, and the Space of Horror in Contemporary Chinese Cinema” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, in room 149 of the Center for the Visual Arts. Admission is free and open to the public.
Li Zeng of the Cinema Studies program in the School of Theatre will discuss how, after a four-decade absence, horror has returned to the cinema of the People's Republic of China at the turn of the 21st century. The presentation will address censorship of the horror genre, the factors that account for the revival of this genre and the theme and style of contemporary Chinese horror films in relation to international horrors and Chinese social and cultural context.
