Illinois State University is rolling out a new tech-savvy tool to reach out to alumni, students and fans of the University. Illinois State now has its own SMS short code, 71857, allowing cell phone users to text to stay engaged with the University, enter for chances to win prizes, vote in polls and find out about alumni events happening in their area.
“Our goal is always to stay ahead of the curve and to stay in touch with our alumni and fans," said Vice President of University Advancement Dianne Ashby. "Mobile technology has grown rapidly over the past two years and will only continue to grow. We are excited about our branded short code and have been amazed by the response already.”
After a test last year during basketball season, Illinois State Athletics has also been using the short code to get fans involved at sporting events. During Homecoming, parade-goers will be able to text 71857 to “Vote the Float” and pick their favorite parade float. The winner, as chosen by the people, will be awarded a trophy at halftime of the Homecoming football game. People on campus will also be able to use the same technology to vote in the Homecoming decorating contest.
The short code works by cell phone users texting specific key words to 71857. Illinois State’s short code has unlimited key words, thus unlimited potential for use across the entire University. The keywords will be advertised and marketed in multiple places depending on the specific campaign.
Right now, Redbird Athletics and University Advancement are using the short code, but University Marketing and Communications plans to open up its use to other University groups over the next year. After Jan. 1, it is expected that the short code will also be used to engage students.
