The Illinois State University Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is hosting German Week Aug. 25-28 with a series of free activities.
The German section of the Languages, Literatures, and Cultures department offers opportunities to renew or forge ties with the German-speaking community through courses and events, held up to four times weekly at the same times and places of German Week events. Those interested in traveling to Germany or exploring their German roots have taken courses and attended these events.
German Week highlights opportunities that may not be known to others in the community. Anyone interested in taking a fall course in German language, literature or culture may obtain information at the events or by e-mailing Professors Andrew Weeks, James van der Laan or Elke Segelcke.
Like much of Illinois, Bloomington has a strong German cultural tradition going back to the 19th century, recognizable by the names in the phone book and on gravestones. At one time, there was a large and diverse German-speaking community here with German schools, churches, a synagogue and an athletic association or “Turnverein.” A German emigrant who fled his native country after the failed revolution of 1848 built much of downtown Bloomington.
