The Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology’s Fall 2009 Teaching Excellence Series, which begins Wednesday, Sept. 2, is designed to offer the University community an opportunity to talk about two sometimes troublesome topics: plagiarism and assessment.
Series 1: Plagiarism: Everybody’s Doing It (So What Should We Do About It?) includes the workshops “Plagiarism: The Myth—and the Reality,” Wednesday, Sept. 2; “Reframing the Discussion: ‘Prevention’ ‘Plagiarism’ and ‘Stealing’,” Wednesday, Sept. 16; “Community Rights and Responsibilities: What to Do When Students Don’t Cite,” Wednesday, Sept. 30; and “Faculty Rights and Responsibilities: Encouraging and Supporting Ethical Writing Practices in the Classroom,” Wednesday, Oct. 14. All workshops will meet in the CTLT Instructional Resource Commons from 3:00-4:30 p.m.
Series 2: Assessing Student Learning will include the workshops “Intentional Teaching: But I want them to learn EVERYTHING!,” Thursday, Sept.10; “Intentional Learning: How will I know it when I see it?,” Thursday, Sept. 24; “Intentional Feedback: Yep, we’re on the right track!,” Thursday, Oct. 8; and “Intentional Grading: Because it LOOKS like a ‘B’!” Thursday, Oct. 22. Workshops in this series will meet from 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in the CTLT Instructional Resource Commons. Participants should feel free to bring their brown bag lunches.
Although the Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology’s Teaching Excellence Series is designed primarily to meet the needs of faculty who want to explore a teaching-related topic more deeply than is possible in a single workshop, each session is designed to function either independently or as a part of the series. Anyone with teaching responsibilities at Illinois State is invited to attend, and those who attend three or more workshops in a single series will receive certificates of participation. Complete session descriptions are available on the CTLT Web site.
