Illinois State University is calling all fans, friends and alumni to “Get in the Game” for Homecoming 2011 from Oct. 10 to Oct. 16. This year’s schedule combines community favorites and new events, including a Primetime celebration in Uptown Normal and new parade route. Redbird Primetime showcases Uptown
This year’s Homecoming celebration will be extended into Uptown Normal with a new event, Redbird Primetime, from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15. Attendees will enjoy a street-fest atmosphere with entertainment, extended business hours, specials and family-friendly activities. Featured performances are planned from the Big Red Marching Machine, Gamma Phi Circus and Mike Lockett – The Normal Storyteller. The event is free and the community is encouraged to attend.
Parade has new start time and route
A community favorite has a few new twists and turns. The 2011 Homecoming parade has been re-tooled this year. The parade steps off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, and will travel a new route as it will make its way through Uptown Normal. Favorite returning events:
The Miller Park Zoo, Children’s Discovery Museum, and Pepsi Ice Center will be hosting special events for alumni, students and community members in conjunction with the Homecoming celebration.
Reggie Day at the Children’s Discovery Museum will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. This event will feature kids activities, Illinois State Homecoming giveaways and opportunities for your children to interact with Reggie Redbird. Cost is $6 per person ages 2 and over. Children under the age of 2 are free.
Reggie Day at Miller Park Zoo is set from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10. The Normal Storyteller, Mike Lockett, will be on hand to present a story to guests. Cost is $3.50 per person ages 3 to 12, and 60 and up. Adults ages 13 to 59 are $5. Children under the age of 3 are free.
On Friday, Oct. 14, the Pepsi Ice Center in Bloomington will host a special Illinois State Homecoming Skate from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to wear Illinois State gear to save $1 off the $5 cost to participate in the open skate.
Rader Family Farms will host a 100 Years of Ag celebration on Saturday, Oct. 15 to Sunday, Oct. 16. Live music, family farm activities, and a 7-acre corn and bean maze will feature Reggie in the design. Reggie Redbird will make a special appearance at the farm on Oct. 16.
Great Urban Race
The urban adventure competition, known as the Great Urban Race, leads off Homecoming fun on Saturday, Oct. 8. The race will begin at the Student Fitness Center at noon. Participants in this event will use clues to find checkpoints, complete challenges, and navigate the streets of downtown Bloomington, Uptown Normal and the Illinois State University campus. The Great Urban Race was founded by Illinois State alum Joseph Reynolds ’03 and has found success in 20 major cities across the nation. Registration for the race is $50 per person before 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, and is open online . The cost is $60 per person on race day.
Town & Gown 5K Run
The Town & Gown 5K Run is scheduled for 7 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15. The run will begin at the Student Fitness Center and will follow a route through campus and Uptown Normal. If participants register prior to Thursday, Oct. 13, cost is $15 for children 13 and under; and $25 per person for ages 14 and up. On Oct. 13, the cost will increase to $30 for all participants. Redbirds host South Dakota
The Illinois State football team hosts South Dakota on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Hancock Stadium for Homecoming 2011. A 3 p.m. kick-off is planned as head coach Brock Spack and the Redbirds prepare to take on the Coyotes of South Dakota. Tickets may be purchased and printed online or by calling the Illinois State Athletics Ticket Office at 438-8000. Tailgating lots will open at 7 a.m. on game day with tailgating activities beginning at noon. Car spaces cost $10 per game and RVs are $20.
Illinois State Film Festival at Normal Theatre
A collection of movies featuring the work of Illinois State alumni will be shown at the Normal Theater during Homecoming week. The Illinois State Homecoming Film Fest will take place Thursday, Oct. 13 to Sunday, Oct. 16, featuring Illinois State alumni Sean Hayes, Jane Lynch, John Malkovich and Brian Conner. Special note: A complimentary shuttle bus will be available at the Illinois State Alumni Center at 1101 N. Main St., Normal, on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. heading to campus, and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. heading back to the Alumni Center.
