Cellists of all ages and abilities are invited to Illinois State University’s Cello Workshop on Sunday, Oct. 9, from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. The workshop will feature a master class, a cello ensemble rehearsal and performance and a recital by Joseph Johnson, principal cellist of the Toronto Symphony. Events will take place in Cook Hall and Kemp Recital Hall.
Workshop sessions will include yoga for young cellists, taught by yoga instructor Tona Schenck and a cello technique class for players of all ages conducted by Adriana Ransom, assistant professor of cello at Illinois State, and Brian Kubin, assistant professor of cello at Truman State University.
Students in middle school through college will have the opportunity to participate in a master class led by Ransom, Kubin and Joseph Johnson, principal cellist of the Toronto Symphony. The day will conclude with an informal reading and performance of cello ensemble music. Cellists of all ages with one or more years of playing experience can participate.
Guest artist Joseph Johnson will present a recital with pianist Victor Asuncion at 1:30 p.m. in Kemp Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.
Registration for the all day workshop is $10, $15 after Oct. 1. Registration for the afternoon cello ensemble only is $5, $7 after Oct. 1. An optional lunch can be purchased for $6.
