Illinois State University Associate Professor of English Christopher Breu has been granted a Fulbright Visiting Research Chair Award to conduct research at McMaster University. Breu will be in Hamilton for four months, starting in September, conducting research for the project, The Insistence of the Material: Literature in the Age of Biopolitics.
As the Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Globalization and Cultural Studies, Breu’s project will focus on research that looks at the material dimensions of everyday life in an era in which economic and cultural production have become increasingly focused on the virtual, immaterial and textual aspects of human existence.
“It is with a great deal of pleasure that I welcome Dr. Christopher Breu to the distinguished group of Canada-U.S. Fulbright Scholars,” said Michael Hawes, executive director of Fulbright Canada. “Dr. Breu’s project deals with an issue which is of particular significance to both Canada and the United States, and his research could have far-reaching implications for the study and teaching of literature in the era of globalization on both sides of the border.”
Breu holds a Ph.D. in literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a BA in English, language and literature (non-U.S.) from Northwestern University. He is the author of several books and journal articles and the recipient of multiple teaching awards from Illinois State University recognizing his scholarly achievements and his efforts to engage and impact his students.
