Borg, Tsouvala Named Service Winners at Illinois State University

Borg and TsouvalaIllinois State University will present Professor of Music Paul Borg with the University Outstanding Service Award at the Founders Day Convocation. Georgia Tsouvala, History, will receive the University Service Initiative Award.

The University Service Awards recognize and honor faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in service to Illinois State University. Borg will receive $3,000, and Tsouvala will receive $500.

Borg served as chair of the University Studies Review Committee, which created the current General Education Program. The committee was responsible for recommending that the program be revisited over time, a process that has been put into place. He was also chair of the Academic Senate when it was involved with the redesign of University governance processes under a new Board of Trustees. Borg first joined the Academic Senate in 1987, and has spent more than 20 years as a member of the Senate and on Senate subcommittees. He is a member of the Faculty Review Committee and served as a member of the University Curriculum Committee.

Borg also has served on College of Fine Arts committees, including the College Faculty Status Committee, College Affirmative Action Liaison and the College Council. He served as interim director of the School of Art and has twice served on presidential search committees. Borg chaired the most recent College of Arts and Sciences Dean Search Committee. He also served on steering committees for two NCA accreditation self studies. Borg lends his piano, harpsichord and organ services to faculty, guest artists and students in public performances.

Tsouvala is chair of the Committee on Ancient History for the American Philological Association (APA). For that association, she has organized professional panels and improved communications within the society and with audiences beyond the APA membership. Tsouvala has also served as a referee for grants and conference papers for a variety of organizations. She serves as a mentor for the Women’s Classical Caucus Mentoring Program and assists both scholars and graduate students with professional matters.

Tsouvala also serves as a representative to the Managing Committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, which enables Illinois State students to participate in summer and yearlong programs such as archaeological excavations in Greece, and which supports faculty research into Greek history, language and culture. She is the adviser for the Mu Upsilon Chapter of the national history honor society, Phi Alpha Theta, and has served on the History department’s Awards Committee and the Bone Distinguished Lecture Series Committee. Tsouvala also is an affiliated faculty member for the Women’s and Gender Studies program and serves on the Chicago National Hellenic Museum Advisory Committee.
