Illinois State University awarded the following individuals with doctoral degrees in December.
Vincent Boyd of Normal received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Foundations. His dissertation is titled "An Analysis of Undergraduate Internship Experiences in the Criminal Justice Sciences Department at a Midwestern Public University." The son of Brendon Rogers and the late Loretta Boyd, Boyd is the dean of Enrollment Management and Student Development Services at SUNY Sullivan. He received his bachelor's degree in speech communication from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and his master's degree in communication from the University of Illinois, Springfield. Boyd is a member of the National Association of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships, American Association of Blacks in Higher Education and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
Jonathan Duarte of Stevens Point, Wis., received his Ph.D. in Mathematics. The title of his dissertation is "The Effects of an Undergraduate Algebra Course on Prospective Middle School Teachers' Understanding of Functions, Especially Quadratic Functions." The son of Domesiana and Niacanor Duarte Sr. of Stevens Point and husband of Recel Remorosa, Duarte is an assistant professor the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Cagayan De Oro College, a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Mindanao State University and a master's degree in mathematics from Illinois State University. Duarte is a member of the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics and the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Katherine Gioiz of Palatine received her Ph.D. in Psychology. Her dissertation is titled "Individual Differences in Children's Responsiveness to a Social Skills Intervention." Gioiz is a school psychologist at Community Consolidated School District 59 in Arlington Heights. She received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Illinois State University and is a member of the National Association of School Psychologists.
Kathleen Hickey of Steger received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Foundations. Her dissertation is titled "Leadership Practices and Processes in Turnaround Schools: A Phenomenological Multi-Case Study." The daughter of the late Elizabeth and John Dore and wife of Michael Hickey Jr., Hickey is an assessment coordinator at Governors State University. She received her bachelor's degree and master's degree in mathematics education from St. Xavier University. Hickey is a member of the American Education Research Association, American Association of School Administrators, Illinois Association of School Administrators, International Association of School Business Officials, Illinois Association of School Business Officials and the American Association of School Personnel
Wendy O'Hanlon of Washington received her Ph.D. in Mathematics. The title of her dissertation is "Characterizing the Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Pre-service Secondary Mathematics Teachers." The daughter of Marlene and Scott Knudson and wife of Matthew O'Hanlon, all of Washington, O'Hanlon is an assistant professor at Illinois Central College. She received her bachelor's and master's degree in mathematics from Illinois State University.
Cynthia Pulley of Normal received her Ph.D. in Mathematics. Her dissertation is titled "Using Instruction to Investigate the Effects of Assessing Reasoning Tasks on Students' Understanding of Proof." The daughter of Madonna and Richard Pope of Pickering, Mo., and wife of Phillip Pulley of Normal, Pulley is an associate professor of mathematics at Heartland Community College. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Truman State University. Pulley is a member of Phi Delta Kappa.
Kristal Shelvin of Rockford received her Ph.D. in Psychology. The title of her dissertation is "The Influence of Black Identity Development on Stereotype Threat Activation in African American Children." The daughter of Eurslyn Hine and the late George Hines III of Rockford and wife of Alton Shelvin III of Normal, Shelvin in a school psychologist at Rockford Public School 205. She received her bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Quintin Shepherd of Skokie received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Foundations. His dissertation is titled "Ritual Play and the Liminal: How School Board of Education Members Make and Shape Organizational Culture." The son of Mary and Paul Shepherd and husband of Sarah Shepherd, Shepherd is superintendent of Skokie/Morton Grove #69. He received his bachelor's degree in music education, master's degree in administration and Ed.S. in administration from Western Illinois University. Shepherd is a member of the American Association of School Administrators, Illinois Association of School Administrators and Association of Supervision Curriculum and Development.
Timothy Stauffer of Mackinaw received his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences. The title of his dissertation is "The Ecological Physiology of the Eggs of Two Species of Lubber Grasshopper, Romalea Microptera (Beauvois) and Taeniopoda Eques (Burmeister)." The son of Connie and Garry Stauffer of Oregon and husband of Melissa Stauffer of Mackinaw, Stauffer is a laboratory coordinator in biology at Bradley University. He received his bachelor's degree in biology/zoology at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and his master's degree in biology at Illinois State University. He is a member of the Entomological Society of America, Orthopterists Society and the Illinois State Academy of Science.
Benjamin Wellenreiter of Morton received his Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. His dissertation is titled "Organized Chaos: Young Adolescents' Perceptions of Social Processes Within a Middle School Cafeteria." The son of Linda and Daniel Wellenreiter of Danvers, Wellenreiter, is a member of the social studes faculty at Morton Junior High School. He received his bachelor's degree in social science education from Illinois State University and his master's degree in school counseling from Bradley University. Wellenreiter is a member of the National Council for the Social Studies, Illinois Council for the Social Studies and the National Middle School Association.
