ISU Academy of Seniors and Mornings with the Professors Scheduled

Illinois State University's Academy of Seniors and Mornings with the Professors will start in March and continue through June.  Sponsored by the Senior Professionals of Illinois State University and affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network, most classes will be held in the Illinois State University Alumni Center at 1101 N. Main St. in Normal.

Academy of Seniors offers four classes, and the speakers and their topics include:

  • Corruption: Causes and Consequences - lllinois State History Assistant Professor Oguzhan Dincer - March 21, 24, 28 & 31 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Famous Trials From History - Guilty or Not Guilty - Illinois State Professor Bob Bradley - April 5, 12, 19 & 26 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
  • Water Concerns: From Local to Global - Illinois State Professor Emeritus James Carter - May 3, 10, 17 & 24 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Lunchtime Journey: April 21 - Morocco; April 28 - Lebanon; May 5 - Poland; May 12 - Mexico.  Classes are from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. except for the Poland class, which is a bus trip from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The Mornings with the Professors are scheduled for five Fridays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. (except April 29), and speakers and their topics include:

  • Happy Anniversary, College of Fine Arts - Pete Guither, assistant to the dean of the College of Fine Arts and Professor Emeritus John Kirk - April 1
  • They Came from Outer Space - Illinois State Assistant Professor Tasha Dunn - April 8
  • What's That Coming Down the Line? The Railroad in the American Mind - Mike Matejka, local historian - April 15
  • A Global Perspective Regarding Children in Street Situations - Illinois State Associate Professor Maria Schmeeckle - April 22
  • Two Great American Song Writers - Illinois State Professor Emeritus Art Corra - April 29, from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

The summer Academy of Seniors will offer one course:

  • Close Up: Illinois Shakespeare Festival - Artistic Director Deb Alley -June 16, 23, 30 & July 7     

The cost for Mornings with the Professors is $45 for all five sessions or $15 for individual sessions and may be paid at the door. Academy of Seniors classes are $45 except for the Lunchtime Journey, which is $120.
