Court of Appeals to Hear Case Arguments on Campus

The Illinois Court of Appeals for the Fourth District will hear oral arguments for two actual cases at Illinois State University on Tuesday, April 12 in the Bone Student Center Old Main Room. A civil case dealing with wrongful termination and workmen's compensation issues will start at 10 a.m. and go to approximately 10:45 a.m. A criminal case involving a great-grandmother convicted of murder and solicitation of murder and appealing based on due process and right to counsel matters will start at 11 a.m. and go to approximately 11:45 a.m. The general public, faculty, staff, and students are welcome to watch the proceedings.

Justice James Knecht, the Presiding Justice of the 4th District Appellate Court, and Politics and Government Professor Robert Bradley are coordinating the event and four justices will participate. Knecht asked the Supreme Court to permit the Fourth District to hold oral arguments on two cases at a public university in order to encourage civic education and a better understanding of the court process. This will mark the first time that the Court of Appeals has heard oral arguments on Illinois State's campus.
