Emeritus Professor of History Susan Westbury will speak on "John Adams, Lawyer and Political Scientist" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, on the main floor of Illinois State University's Milner Library. The talk is part of a lecture series offered in conjunction with the "John Adams Unbound" traveling panel exhibit being shown at Milner Library through Oct. 16.
Admission to Westbury's lecture and to the exhibit is free and open to the public.
Westbury began teaching American history at Illinois State in 1981 after earning her doctorate at the University of Illinois. The Australian native taught courses on the Early Republic, the American Revolution and colonial America. She retired in 2005.
The lecture series continues on Sept. 29: with W. Michael Weis of Illinois Wesleyan University speaking on "John Adams and the Origins of American Diplomacy" in Ames Library's Beckman Auditorium; The topic Oct. 8 will be "John Adams and the Illinois Country: The Influence of a Gentle Nationalist," presented by Junius Rodriguez at 7:30 p.m. in the Gammon Room of Melick Library at Eureka College, Melick Library, Gammon Room.
"John Adams Unbound" is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The panel exhibit focuses on Adams' 3,500-volume personal library that his family donated in 1894 to the Boston Public Library.
