Academy Award nominated director Morgan Spurlock will speak on the Illinois State University campus on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. in Braden Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Spurlock is the creator and producer of FX's critically acclaimed and award winning series, 30 Days. His first feature film, Super Size Me, was released in 2004 and became one of the highest grossing box office documentaries of all time. The film, which centered on Spurlock's experiment to eat only fast food for a month, received an Oscar nomination, the Writers Guild of America Best Documentary Screenplay Award and Best Director prizes at the Sundance Film Festival and the Edinburgh Film Festival. Shortly after the theatrical opening of Super Size Me, Spurlock released his first non-fiction book, Don't Eat This Book, a further examination of the role of fast food in American society.
In July 2005, the first season of his television series 30 Days premiered on the FX network. The weekly series received praise from critics for addressing timely issues including homophobia, racial and religious prejudice and living on minimum wage. Spurlock was a co-star and producer of the 2008 film What Would Jesus Buy?, based on the work of Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping. His recent documentary film, Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?, follows Spurlock's travels around the Middle East in search of the elusive al Qaeda leader.
Spurlock's presentation is sponsored by the University Program Board, College of Applied Science and Technology and Milner Library.
