Illinois State University Diversity Advocacy is promoting several events during the month of September. The events are free and open to the public.
Sunday Sept. 6: People Realizing Individuality and Diversity through Education (PRIDE) is sponsoring a welcome picnic at 1 p.m. on the Quad. PRIDE will provide food, fun and chance for students to learn about GLBT issues and how to get involved with the organization.
Saturday Sept. 12: Join the Association of Latin American Students (ALAS) and welcome students back to campus at "Bienvenidos". The celebration is on the Quad from 12 p.m.-4 p.m. and will include food and music.
Tuesday Sept. 15: Join Diversity Advocacy, Latin American and Latino Studies program and University Housing Services in viewing "Made in L.A." at 7p.m. at the Normal Theatre in Uptown Normal. "Made in L.A." is an intimate and inspiring Emmy Award-winning documentary that follows the personal transformation of three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles sweatshops during their three-year odyssey to obtain basic labor protections and achieve personal dignity. A discussion with the director and producer Alamudena Carracedo will follow.
Diversity Advocacy, a unit of the Dean of Students Office, helps underrepresented students find their way at Illinois State through a variety of resources, programs and activities. Diversity Advocacy works to facilitate a supportive campus environment in which underrepresented students can flourish academically and socially. The office also serves to raise cultural awareness across campus among students, faculty and staff.
