William Cernota, cellist with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and principal cellist of three other Chicago ensembles, will join local pianist and Illinois Wesleyan faculty member Joy Doran in a joint recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, in Kemp Recital Hall at Illinois State University. Admission is free and open to the public.
Their program will include Bach's Sonata No. 2 in D major for piano and cello, Kodály's Adagio, "Pohádka" (Tale) by Leoš Janácek, Boccherinis Sonata No. 6 in A major for cello and piano, "Morpheus" by Rebecca Clarke and Nadia Boulanger's "Trois Pièces pour Violoncelle et Piano."
Cernota currently is on the music faculties of Northwestern and Loyola universities. He is principal cellist in Concertante di Chicago, Chicago Opera Theater and the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, as well as a regular substitute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Center and Ravinia.
Joy Doran has served on the IWU faculty, teaching piano classes, applied minor piano lessons, and working as a coach and accompanist.She is widely experienced as a collaborative pianist, frequently performing in recital and in workshops in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to performing, Ms. Doran has maintained an active private teaching and accompanying studio.
