The Sonneries Woodwind Quintet, one of the longstanding faculty ensembles in the Illinois State University School of Music, will present a free concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, in Kemp Recital Hall.
The quintet is comprised of flutist Kimberly Risinger, clarinetist David Gresham, oboist Judith Dicker, bassoonist Michael Dicker and horn player Joe Neisler.
The Sonneries program will consist of two pieces. The first is Ludwig Thuille's Sextet in B flat, opus 6, and will include faculty pianist Tuyen Tonnu. "The music," said Michael Dicker, "reminds me of Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, with a touch of Strauss. It provides our ensemble with a rare 'romantic' period piece."
The second piece, David Maslanka's Quintet No. 4, which Dicker said "is not very long but is filled with variety." Maslanka has composed several pieces for Illinois State musicians, particularly for the Wind Ensemble. In February, Kimberly Risinger performed Maslanka's "Song Book for Flute and Wind Ensemble Wind" for the College Band Directors National Association North Central Division regional convention held in Normal.
"Maslanka's quintets are so good, that I believe in 50 years they will be considered staples of the quintet literature," Dicker said.
