Chinese Policies in Tibet Subject of Seminar March 31

"Threat to State Legitimacy or a Local Border Problem? China's Policies in Tibet and the Fifth Forum" will be the topic of a presentation by Robert Barnett on Wednesday, March 31, from 12-1 p.m. in the Bone Student Center Third Floor East Lounge.  The event is free and open to the public.

Barnett is an assistant professor of contemporary Tibetan studies and director of the Modern Tibetan Studies Program at Columbia University.  He has written and edited numerous books on modern Tibet, including A Poisoned Arrow: The Secret Petition of the 10th Panchen Lama, Leaders in Tibet: A Directory, Cutting Off the Serpent's Head: Tightening Control in Tibet 1994-1995, and Resistance and Reform in Tibet.  His most recent book is Tibetan Modernities: Notes from the Field on Social and Cultural Change, co-edited with Ronald Schwartz.   Barnett teaches courses on Tibetan film, television, biography, and other subjects.

His presentation is part of Illinois State University's International Studies Seminar Series exploring topics in global politics and culture. The seminar series is organized by the Unit for International Linkages, Office of International Studies and Programs, and the Women's and Gender Studies Program.
