Cellist Betsy Husby, along with pianist Alex Chernyshev, will present a guest artist recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, in Kemp Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
Their program, which they call "Mostly Living Composers," will include Justin Henry Rubin's "Waltz," Samuel Barber's Sonata for Cello and Piano, opus 6, Mendelssohn's "Song Without Words," and a composition by the same name by Jonathan Leshnoff. The recital will conclude with Jean Perrault's "Brother Malcomb" and Michael Horvit's Duo Fantasy for Cello and Piano.
Husby has been principal cello of the Duluth Superior Symphony since 1986 and is assistant professor of cello at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She is also a member of the Highland String Quartet. Her DMA, master of music and bachelor's degrees are from State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Chernyshev earned his doctorate and master's degrees from the prestigious St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) Conservatory and, after teaching and performing in Russia, moved permanently to the U.S. in 1991. He has resided since then in Duluth, where he maintains an active life as both a performer and serving as head of the piano department at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Husby and Chernyshev have been playing together for 20 years.
