Candy, flowers and a big band dance will make Valentine's Day a success this year, with Tom Marko's Illinois State University Jazz Ensembles providing the music. Candy and flowers should come from elsewhere.
From 7 to 10 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14, the ISU jazz ensembles will present the annual Valentine's Big Band Dance at the New Lafayette Club, 1602 S. Main St., Bloomington. Tickets are $15 per person, at the door only, and a cash bar will be available. Proceeds help support the jazz program at Illinois State. Formal attire is not required, but dancers are discouraged from wearing jeans or t-shirts.
Jazz ensemble director Tom Marko created the Valentine's Big Band Dance six years ago to help revive and encourage the dance band tradition in Central Illinois. Big band classics from the 1930's and '40s, along with various ballroom dance styles are featured. Dancers have the rare opportunity to hear live music by such great composers as Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Harry James and Count Basie. Local dancers of all ages get to do the cha-cha-cha, rumba, waltz, swing, salsa and samba.
Doors will open at 6:45. There will be a 50/50 drawing at 9 p.m. For more information, contact Tom Marko 438-2541 or tjmarko@ilstu.edu
