Illinois State University received an honorable mention for above average student voter turnout in the 2008 election, as calculated by the 2008 Campus Votes Challenge.
The national average voter turnout for college students ages 18-24 was 59.7 percent. Illinois State's turnout was over 60 percent. Through the "Trust Me, I'm a Voter" campaign sponsored by The American Democracy Project at Illinois State, students, faculty, and staff helped to register a record number of voters and educate them about the candidates, issues, and importance of voting.
The Campus Votes Challenge was a joint initiative of the Tisch College's Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University and Campus Compact, a nonprofit coalition of 1,100 college and university presidents. Over 40 undergraduate universities and colleges participated in the challenge.
