Illinois State University will host the 33rd Annual AmericanChemical Society (ACS) High School Chemistry Contest from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, in the Bone Student Center Brown Ballroom.
The contest is open to students who are enrolled in or have completed first or second year chemistry courses. Each school may select five students from each of its chemistry classes to participate. To date, over 300 students from various central Illinois high schools have registered to participate.
This year's event is organized and sponsored by the Department of Chemistry, the Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (CeMaST) and the Chemistry Club at Illinois State, with additional support from the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Bradley University and the Illinois Heartland Section of the American Chemical Society.
First and second place winners of the First Year Chemistry Contest and the Advanced Chemistry Contest will receive full scholarships valued at $450 to the 2010 Illinois Summer Research Academy at Illinois State (http://cemast.illinoisstate.edu/projects/isra/index.shtml), a week-long event where Illinois high school students participate in hands-on research with Illinois State professors. Third place winners will receive partial scholarships.
Students and their teachers will also be honored with certificates, awards, and plaques by the American Chemical Society at their schools in late May. First place winners will also receive a traveling plaque to be displayed in the high school for one year. In addition, students with top scores on each examination will be invited to participate in the International Chemistry Olympiad Program (ICO). The ICO is an international competition cosponsored by the American Chemical Society.
