Illinois State University student Matthew Ware is the recipient of a 2010-11 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. The Bloomington native was one of 278 national winners from a field of 1,111. Ware will receive up to $7,500 to cover the cost of tuition, books, fees and room and board for his senior year.
Ware (pictured to the left) is a sophomore majoring in physics with a 4.0 grade point average. He is a Presidential Scholar in the Honors Program and is currently conducting research with Professors Rainer Grobe and Q. Charles Su. Ware wrote a research essay on "Conversion of Energy into Matter."
Stephon Hon (pictured to the right) of Normal received an Honorable Mention for 2010-11. He is a junior Honors Program student pursuing a biochemistry/molecular biology major with a 3.94 grade point average. Hon is conducting research with Professor David Cedano, and wrote an essay, "Synthesis of Toluidine Blue - Tiopronin-gold nanoparticles and the photosensitization of Leishmania tarentolae."
Goldwater Scholars have impressive academic qualifications that have gained the attention of prestigious post-graduate fellowship programs. The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established by Public Law 99-661 on Nov. 14, 1986. The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater fosters and encourages outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.
