"The Spirit of Democracy: The Global Boom, Recession and Renewal" will be the subject of Illinois State University's Hibbert R. Roberts Lecture in Public Policy, presented by Larry Diamond on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the Bone Student Center Old Main Room. The event is free and open to the public.
A professor of political science and sociology at Stanford University, Diamond is also a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, founding co-editor of the Journal of Democracy and co-director of the International Forum for Democratic Studies of the National Endowment for Democracy. In 2004, Diamond served as a senior advisor to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad and has since lectured and written on U.S. policy in Iraq and the wider challenges of post-conflict reconstruction. His newest book, The Spirit of Democracy: The Struggle to Build Free Societies Throughout the World, explores the sources of global democratic progress and stress and the future prospects of democracy.
Hibbert R. Roberts was chair of the Department of Political Science at Illinois State University for 22 years. The lecture series was established by his family and friends to honor Roberts, who was mentor, colleague, advocate and friend to faculty and students alike. The event is sponsored by Illinois State's Department of Politics and Government and Pi Sigma Alpha political science honor society with support from the Sage Fund.
