Guest speaker Suzanne Oboler of John Jay College of Criminal Justice-CUNY, will speak on "Latino, Hispanic...The Consequences of Ethnic Labels in Contemporary U.S. Society" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Old Main Room of Illinois State University's Bone Student Center.
Oboler, who is a professor of Latin American and Latina/o Studies, is just one of the events scheduled in celebration of Latino Heritage Month at Illinois State. All the events are free and open to the public.
The month begins with the Black Student Union Quad Jam from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6. Food, entertainment and information about BSU and other student organizations will be offered at tables on the quad.
ALAS, the Association of Latin American Students, will sponsor ¡Bienvenidos! from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Diversity Advocacy office at 305 N. School Street. Food and music will help welcome students back to campus.
How to Become a "Diversity Champion" Campus Webinar (a web seminar) will take place from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Center for Teaching Learning and Technology (CTLT) room 103B - 301 S. Main Street, ITDC building (just north of Jimmy Johns).
The webinar will deal with diverse issues in higher education, and innovative educators will take an in-depth look at proactive strategies that help institutions put their diversity goals into action. It will focus on several "Diversity Champions" and share their best proactive stories in order to help participants develop innovative practices and solutions that will foster a positive culture change on their campus.
A Diversity Retreat will be sponsored for students, free of charge, by Diversity Advocacy from Sept. 19 to 21 at Aurora University in Lake Geneva, Wis. Students must apply by Sept. 12 at www.deanofstudents.ilstu.edu
