A larger and more diverse freshman class has helped Illinois State University once again meet its enrollment goals for the 2008-09 academic year. The University today announced a fall enrollment of 20,450, which includes 3,394 new freshmen and 1,704 transfer students. Graduate enrollment increased to 2,501 students.
"Our strong enrollment of highly talented students reflects Illinois State's continuing reputation as a top-choice institution," said President Al Bowman. "With retention rates at historic highs, our students can look forward to a successful future at Illinois State."
As planned, the freshman class was slightly larger than last year's class. It was also a more diverse group with the number of freshmen from underrepresented groups increasing by 13 percent.
"Interest in Illinois State continues to grow," said Jonathan Rosenthal, assistant vice president for Enrollment Management and Academic Services. "Applications to the University were up 11 percent over last year, and the continued high quality of the applicants made for some very difficult choices as we admitted our freshman class."
