On Sunday, Sept. 21, the Big Red Marching Machine - Illinois State University's acclaimed marching band - will perform for a large audience of humans and, perhaps, its largest-ever audience of canines.
The band has been invited to perform at the final day of Dwight Harvest Days, which begins at 12:45 with the annual Basset Waddle, a parade of hundreds of basset hounds and their owners down West Mazon Avenue. Other species, including the Big Red Marching Machine, begin their parade at 1 p.m.
The Basset Waddle is part of the Guardian Angel Basset Rescue's (GABR) Illinois Basset Bash and Waddle held that weekend. GABR rescues basset hounds from Illinois and Indiana that are in jeopardy. Last year, more than 300 were rescued and placed in new homes by the organization.
Before the parade, the ISU marching band will perform in an 11:30 a.m. concert at GABR Park, located on West Waubonsie Street in Dwight, followed by playing the Star Spangled Banner. After the parade in the afternoon, the Big Red Marching Machine will present its field show at 4:45 as part of the Harvest Days Invitational Band competition at Oughton Athletic Field.
