Two exhibitions open Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the University Galleries at Illinois State University for 12-day runs. "The Election Show" features artists' responses to issues related to the 2008 presidential election. "Deborah Aschheim" features works by Los Angeles artist Aschheim, whose installations are based on invisible networks of perception and thought, using light, plastic, video and sound to translate the private, shifting space of memory into a physical space.
The exhibitions, which run through Nov. 16, will share an opening reception at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4. Admission is free and open to the public.
"The Election Show" provides an open forum for both student and professional artists (from Chicago, Los Angeles, and the Bloomington-Normal area) to address issues of personal, national or international significance. An open call-to-artists has yielded a variety of work in such diverse media as video, graphic design, painting and collage.
Deborah Aschheim's recent work is based on a series of personal experiments that are equal parts science and poetry, and includes collaborations with musician/composer Lisa Mezzacappa, and with Dr. Greg Siegle, director of the Program in Cognitive Affective Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine.
Her most recent exhibitions include "Deborah Aschheim: Reconsider" at Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, and "The Lining of Forgetting" at the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, N.C.
University Galleries is open Saturday through Monday noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Wednesday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
