Speaker Nov. 10 on Behind the Scenes of a Presidential Campaign

Date: 11/10/08

Contact: Marc Lebovitz

Twin Cities native Stephen Brokaw, senior political consultant in Ohio for President-Elect Barack Obama's presidential campaign, will speak about his experiences at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the College of Business Building room 139.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Brokaw is a 2002 graduate of University High School in Normal and a 2006 graduate of Harvard University.  Prior to his position in Ohio, he was the constituency director for the campaign and also served as an intern in Obama's Senate Office.  Brokaw was hired at the time Obama announced his candidacy in February 2007, when only 40 staff members began their campaign work.

Brokaw will talk about what goes on behind the scenes of a presidential campaign, how they used new media, such as blogs, e-mails, Facebook, etc., and the importance of reaching the 18-24 year old voters. He will also do a question-and-answer session with the audience.

The event is co-sponsored by the ISU Honors Program, Department of Politics & Government, University High School and Trust Me, I'm a Voter. "Trust Me...I'm a Voter" is a non-partisan campaign initiated on the Illinois campus which focused on three primary goals: registering voters, educating voters about issues and turning out the vote on Election Day.
