The current economic crisis has many people worried about the future of their jobs, investments and retirement plans. In his book, Empty Nest Egg: Why You Must Start Your Own Business NOW, Illinois State University professor Terry W. Noel explains how starting a personal business may mean the difference between prosperity and poverty in the coming years.
"Entrepreneurship is the root of all business and the foundation of our economic system," says Noel. "It is also a forgotten skill in our society. As more and more of us have come to derive our main income from jobs, we have lost the ability to fend for ourselves economically. We have forgotten how to open and run a business, a skill that was commonplace in the past. The good news is that most people have talents and skills that they take for granted. Often, those skills and talents can be put to use to start businesses that provide real value to other people. And you do not have to quit your job to get started."

Throughout the book, Noel stresses the importance of integrity. "It is imperative that you be honest with yourself as well as the people you do business with," he says. "Many businesses fail because people ignore bad news or refuse to face reality. Starting a business is as much about character as it is making money."
Noel, a professor of management and quantitative methods in Illinois State's College of Business, teaches and conducts research on entrepreneurial learning and motivation. He has been published in numerous books and academic journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of Management Education, the Journal of Small Business Management, and the Journal of Entrepreneurship Education.
