Project Runway's Tim Gunn Headlines Science and Technology Week April 13-16

Fashion expert and Project Runway co-host Tim Gunn will be the keynote speaker for Illinois State University's Science and Technology Week on Wednesday, April 15.  Other events during the week will focus on sustainable urbanism, getting kids into nature and agriculture's role in a green economy.

"An Evening with Tim Gunn" will be held in conjunction with the Apparel Merchandising and Design Association (AMDA) Fashion Show on Wednesday, April 15 at 7 p.m. in the Bone Student Center Brown Ballroom.  Tickets for the event are $20 for students and $30 for non-students and are available at ticketmaster.com   For further ticket information phone (309) 438-7602.  Gunn will also hold a book signing following the event.  His presentation is co-sponsored by Illinois State's Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology (CeMaST) and the Sage Trust Fund.

Gunn is chief creative officer at Liz Claiborne Inc. and serves as co-host of Bravo TV's Emmy-nominated Project Runway, a reality-based fashion design program.  Harry N. Abrams publishers released his book, Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste, and Style in 2007.  Gunn currently stars in his own show, Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, which is based on his book.

Previously, Gunn served as chair of the Department of Fashion Design at Parsons The New School for Design and was a vital part of the Parsons community for more than 23 years. Appointed to the position in 2000, he was charged with retooling and invigorating the curriculum for the 21st century. Under Gunn's direction, the department strengthened its position as the indisputable leader in fashion design education in America and as one of only a handful of leading programs in the world.

"Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design with Nature" will be the topic of a presentation by Doug Farr on Monday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bone Student Center Old Main Room.  The event is free and open to the public. 

Farr is president and CEO of Farr Associates, a Chicago-based sustainable urbanism and architecture firm.  Farr and Associates develops sustainable master plans for urban areas that incorporate human and natural systems and emphasize green building practices and walkable neighborhoods.  Farr's presentation is co-sponsored by Illinois State's Department of Technology and the Town of Normal.

On Tuesday, April 14, Fran P. Mainella will present "No Child Left Inside" at 7:30 p.m. in the Bone Student Center Old Main Room.  Her presentation is free and open to the public.

Mainella is a visiting scholar in Clemson University's Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management.  Prior to that, she served nearly six years as the 16th director and the first woman to lead the National Park Service.  She is a member of Newsweek Magazine's Environmental Advisory Board, a board member of the National Society for Park Resources, a fellow of the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, a member of the Advisory Board for the Children and Nature Network, and a national speaker on parks and recreation.  Her presentation is co-sponsored by Illinois State's School of Kinesiology and Recreation.

"Agriculture's Role in a Green Economy" will be the topic of presentation by Jon Scholl on Thursday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bone Student Center Main Room.  Scholl's talk is free and open to the public.

Scholl, a McLean County corn and soybean farmer, is the president of American Farmland Trust (AFT), a non-profit membership organization dedicated to protecting the nation's strategic agricultural resources.  Since its founding in 1980, the group has worked with farmers and ranchers, political leaders and community activists to permanently protect more than one million acres of America's best farm and ranch land.  Previously, Scholl served as counselor to the administrator for agricultural policy at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  Scholl's presentation is co-sponsored by Illinois State's Department of Agriculture.
