Illinois State University's Board of Trustees today approved the renovation of Watterson Towers and Stroud Auditorium along with the University High School roof replacement.
The 40-year-old Watterson Towers houses approximately 2,200 students, and its mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are mostly original equipment. The buildings' exterior and interior finishes, fixtures and equipment all need updating. The capital project will include a new sprinkler system and upgrades to the fire detection and alarm systems. Total cost of the project is estimated at $28.4 million and will be funded with auxiliary facilities system bond proceeds and reserves. The work will be accomplished in phases to keep portions of Watterson Towers open for student use.
The 38-year-old, 9,000-square-foot Stroud Auditorium is used by University High School for classroom, school-wide events, theatrical and other instructional purposes and by the University for campus and community special events. The project to renovate Stroud Auditorium and replace the original University High School roof is estimated to cost $2.95 million and will be funded from the Academic Facilities, Technology and Infrastructure Assessment and privately raised funds. Both lab school projects will be coordinated with the school schedule.
