ISU Adult Enrichment Fall/Winter Programs Scheduled

Illinois State University's Adult Enrichment Programs, which include Academy of Seniors and Mornings with the Professors, will start in August and continue through January.  Sponsored by the Senior Professionals of Illinois State University and affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network, most classes will be held in the Illinois State University Alumni Center at 1101 N. Main St. in Normal.

Academy of Seniors offers five sessions each costing $45, and the speakers and their topics include:

  • Luck or Hard Work: The Amazing Life of Alexander Hamilton - Susan Westbury, professor emeritus from Illinois State - Aug. 20 & 27 and Sept. 3 & 10 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.  (This session will be held at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 1700 N. Towanda Ave.)
  • Agriculture in the 21st Century: Can Technology Feed the World and Save the Environment? - Rob Rhykerd, chair of the Illinois State Agriculture department - Sept. 16, 18, 23 & 25 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. .  (This session will be held at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 1700 N. Towanda Ave.)
  • Does South Asia Matter - Ali Riaz, chair of the Illinois State Politics and Government department - Oct. 21, 23, 28 & 30 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Rock & Roll: The Sounds of Postwar American History - Richard Hughes, Illinois State assistant professor from the History department - Nov. 3, 5, 10 & 12 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Atheists in the News: An Appreciation and Critique - Rev. Richard Watts - Jan. 13, 15, 20 & 22 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

The Mornings with the Professors are scheduled for Fridays from 9:30-11:30 a.m., except for the Oct. 24 lecture, which will be at 1:30 p.m., and speakers and their topics include:

  • Do All Sopranos Really Wear Horns? - Michelle Vought, Illinois State associate professor from the School of Musics - Oct. 3
  • Traveling Back Through Time: The Back Roads of McLean County - Donald Meyer, U of I County Extension director- Oct. 10
  • Value of the U.S. Dollar: What You Should Know - William Scott, Illinois State professor of Finance - Oct. 17
  • The 2008 Election: A Turning Point in American History - Robert Bradley, Illinois State Politics and Government professor - Oct. 24
  • Breathing New Life Into Democracy: Exploring Civic Engagement Initiatives at Illinois State University - Steve Hunt, co-director of the Illinois State American Democracy Project- Oct. 31

The cost for Mornings with the Professors is $45 for all five sessions or $15 for individual sessions and may be paid at the door.

On Friday, Sept. 26, Adult Enrichment will offer a Classroom Journey called Journey to the Past: Looking at Illinois Landscape in a New Light, which will be an all-day trip with Michael Wiant, director of Dickson Mounds.  Bus transportation, lunch and a snack are included for $65.
