ISU Adult Enrichment Spring/Summer Programs Scheduled

Illinois State University's Adult Enrichment Programs, which include Academy of Seniors and Mornings with the Professors, will start in March and continue through June. Sponsored by the Senior Professionals of Illinois State University and affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network, most classes will be held in the Illinois State University Alumni Center at 1101 N. Main St. in Normal.
Academy of Seniors offers five classes each costing $45, and the speakers and their topics include:
- Elections That Shaped American History - Michael Weis, professor, Illinois Wesleyan University - March 19, 24, 26 & 31 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
- Hot, Dry, and Out of Gas: Environmental Challenges for a New Administration - Anne Nadakavukaren, retired lecturer from the Environmental Health Program at Illinois State - April 8, 15, 22 & 29 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
- Africa in 2009 - Where's the Progress - Ky Ajayi, professor, Illinois State Politics and Government - May 19, 21, 26 & 28 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
- Lunchtime Journey - Route 66, April 23; Cuba, April 30; Brazil, May 7; and China, May 14
The Mornings with the Professors are scheduled for five Fridays from 9:30-11:30 a.m., and speakers and their topics include:
- The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: A New Look at Old Myths and Facts - George Gordon, professor emeritus, Illinois State - April 3
- From Boredom to Bombs: A Day in the Life of a Deployed Soldier - Robert Freitag, judge, Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court - April 10
- Your Place in the Universe as an Intelligent Organism - H. Tak Cheung, director of microbiology, Illinois State - April 17
- ECO Cities: How Can We Green Our Community? - Enid Cardinal, sustainability coordinator, Illinois State; Mercy Davison, urban planner, Town of Normal; and Michael Brown, director, Ecology Action Center - April 24
- Medicine for the Masses: Problems and Possibilities - Greg Shaw, associate professor, Illinois Wesleyan - May 1
- Classroom Journey - Journey to the Past: An Exploration of the I&M Canal - John Lamb, director, I&M Canal and Regional History Collection, Lewis University, June 10
The cost for Mornings with the Professors is $45 for all five sessions or $15 for individual sessions and may be paid at the door. The Lunchtime Journey will cost $120, which covers meals and bus transportation. The bus for the Route 66 trip to the Old Log Cabin in Pontiac will leave at 8:30 a.m. and return at 2 p.m. The cost for the Classroom Journey is $68, which will cover bus transportation, lunch and a snack.
