Illinois State University's Board of Trustees approved the naming of The Wroan Engineering and Technology Center at University High School.
John L. Wroan III, a 1945 graduate of U High, provided financial support for the remodeling of the vocational arts area into an engineering and technology center. His construction company built the current University High School building in 1964.
"We cannot thank John enough for his continuing support of University High School and Illinois State University," said President Al Bowman. "He is a gentleman who has given back to his community in many important ways."
Wroan, a retired Bloomington contractor and businessman, is a native of Deer Creek, Ill. He transferred to U High his junior year, where he played football and basketball and ran track. After graduating from U High in 1945 and completing military service, Wroan attended Iowa State University and then Illinois Wesleyan University, playing basketball under coach Jack Horenberger. His career in the construction business followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, step-grandfather and father. Wroan and his father formed J.L. Wroan & Sons, Inc., with the company reaching 600 employees before Wroan retired in 1983.
