For 12 years, the Alternative Break program at Illinois State University has given students the opportunity to volunteer at locations throughout the country to help meet needs in those communities. Students have volunteered to help build homes for the homeless, feed hungry families, tutor young children and more.
On Dec. 29, however, the Alternative Break will "go international" with a group of 24 students and two staff members leaving for 10 days in Cuzco, Peru. The group will be split into groups and participate in service projects involving teaching English, construction/renovation and child care.
Alternative Break is hosted through Leadership and Service, a unit of the Dean of Students Office. Harriett Steinbach is Community Service Specialist in that unit and can be reached at hmstein@ilstu.edu or by phone at 438-7346.
