A few months ago, the ambient multimedia group Axion Theory performed at the University Galleries at Illinois State University to help mark the June opening of the unique exhibition, "Test Pattern Sound Check." Now that the exhibition, the first large-scale exhibit by ISU's arts technology program, is closing, Axion Theory will return.
The four-person Bloomington group - Jason Tucholke, Christopher Lackey, Kevin Smith and Chad Brekke - will perform for free at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, in the main gallery. The band uses electro, acoustic and vocal elements to create unpredictable and widely varied soundscapes.
"Test Pattern Sound Check" features a dozen works by students, faculty and alumni of ISU's program in arts technology, an eight-year-old program which teaches visual arts, music, theater, history of visual and performing arts and digital overlays of the arts. The exhibition includes video, sound, images, three-dimensional work and multimedia installations.
The closing reception will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, and will feature digital music by Nick Hoffman and Stephen Ganser, who performed at the exhibition's opening reception.
"Test Pattern Sound Check" is open from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and noon to 4 p.m. all other days, except Sunday when the galleries are closed. Regular school-year hours begin Aug. 18, when the galleries are open noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays; 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays; and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Information about the galleries is available at (309) 438-5487.
