Saxophonist Paul Nolen of Illinois State University's School of Music will present a free recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, in Kemp Recital Hall.
Nolen's program will include works by Fernande Decruck, Bright Sheng, Libby Larsen and Mischa Zupko, and will feature pianist Tuyen Tonnu and violist Kate Lewis, both of the Music faculty. The recital is part of the Charles W. Bolen Faculty Recital Series.
The program will include Decruck's Sonata in C sharp for alto saxophone and piano, Sheng's "A Tune from Childhood," Larsen's "Bid call for alto saxophone and viola" and Zupko's "In Transit (for alto saxophone and piano).
Nolen has appeared throughout North America as a solo recitalist, chamber musician, jazz performer and contemporary improviser. He received first prize in the 2003 MTNA National Chamber Music Competition, and was a semi-finalist in the 2004 Concert Artist Guild International Competition in New York City. Nolen former taught at the University of Central Arkansas and the University of Windsor-Ontario. He holds his D.M.A. and M.M. degrees from Michigan State University and his B.M. from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
