"Live Simply So Others Can Simply Live" will be the theme of Earth Week events at Illinois State University, April 20-24. The week will feature a presentation by oceanographer Sylvia Earle, a major recycling event on the Quad, the screening of a global warming documentary and tree plantings.
On Monday, April 20, oceanographer Sylvia Earle will present "A Woman in a Strange World" at 5 p.m. in the Bone Student Center Prairie Room. Tickets for the dinner may be purchased at the Linkins (West Campus), Watterson Food Court, and Southside dining centers. Cost is $15.25 for the public. Illinois State meal plan participants can purchase a ticket using one meal access.
Recycle the Quad! will be held throughout the day on Tuesday, April 21. Student groups will use the event to highlight the need for recycling at off-campus apartment complexes. To create visual impact, recyclable materials from apartments will be brought to the Quad for display. The items will be recycled at the end of the event.
Events on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, will include an Earth Day fair on the Quad from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; a tree walk with Illinois State University horticulturist Don Schmidt, beginning at 12 p.m. in the Sassafras Grove seating area on the Quad near Hovey Hall; a sustainability trivia contest in the dining centers during lunch and dinner with a chance to win a green (refurbished) IPOD Nano; and "In the Green Productions," a musical performance and multimedia presentation by Jack Kaufmann at 8 p.m. in Schroeder Hall 138.
Thursday, April 23 will be Reduce your Carbon Footprint Day. Illinois State community members will be encouraged to make wise choices about energy use, transportation and consumption habits. That evening at 7 p.m., the Frontline/PBS documentary Heat will be shown in Capen Auditorium in Edwards Hall. The documentary investigates how the world's largest corporations and governments are responding to Earth's looming environmental disaster. That event is free and open to the public.
On Friday April 24, Illinois State will plant trees on the Quad to honor Arbor Day and the birthday of University founder Jesse Fell. Trees will be planted on the west side of Hovey Hall and at the south end of the Quad, near the Center for the Visual Arts.
