Physics Colloquium to Open Sept. 11 with Alumna Melanie Seelig

Illinois State University alumna Melanie Seelig, a Seattle, Wash., intellectual property attorney, will present a Department of Physics Alumni Lecture at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, in Felmley Hall 133. Admission is free and open to the public.

Seelig, a Board of Regents Scholar and Bone Scholar who graduated summa cum laude in 1994 in Physics and Mathematics, will speak on "The Role of Physics in an Intellectual Property Career." She earned her law degree at the University of Washington.

Since 2003, she has been a member of Christensen, O'Connor, Johnson and Kindness, PLLC, a firm she joined as an associate in 1997. Her practice is directed to counseling and management in all aspects of intellectual property law, including U.S. and international patent and trademark prosecution, copyright prosecution, enforcement and agreement work involving all areas of intellectual property and due diligence reviews related to mergers and acquisitions.

The next lecture in the Physics Colloquium Series will be alumnus Barry Lai, '83, of Argonne National Laboratory at 4 p.m. Sept. 19 in Moulton 214 discussing "Why Materials and Life Scientists Alike are Excited about Synchrontron-Based X-Ray Microscopes (a physicist's invention)."

On Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. in Moulton 214, ISU Biological Sciences Professor John Sedbrook will speak on "Petroleum, Global Warming and the Future of Biofuels;" on Oct. 24, University of Illinois Physics Professor Paul Selvin will speak on "Single Molecule Measurements of Molecular Motors, In Vitro and In Vivo;" and Andrew McGilvray of Caterpillar, Inc., will speak Oct. 31 on a topic to be announced.
