Illinois State University's Center for the Study of Education Policy
will co-host the Protecting Student Access to Higher Education Symposium on
Friday, Oct. 20, at the Embassy Suites Downtown in Chicago. The Symposium is
free, but registration is limited and required by Wednesday, Oct. 11. To

The conference, co-hosted by the State Higher Education Executive Officers and the National Association of State Student Grant and Aid Programs, will disseminate the results of a study on higher education funding and student financial aid. The study, funded by the Lumina Foundation for Education, examined the effects of recession on student access to college, identified states that have been successful in maintaining financial access and collected policy strategies used by those states.
Ross Hodel, director of the Center for the Study of Education Policy, will provide a project overview and others will address the areas of recession, retrenchment and recovery. There will be a discussion of developing better policy approaches and aligning tuition, student financial aid and appropriations. The symposium will also feature panel presentations by the directors of four other national student access projects.
The vice president for the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, Joni Finney, will discuss "Measuring Up: the 2006 National Report Card." The wrap-up session will feature Paul Lingenfelter, executive director of the State Higher Education Executive Officers, on the topic of challenges and an agenda for the future of higher education funding and student financial aid.
