Percussion Ensembles to Present Fall Concert Nov. 5

Date: 10/26/06
Contact: Marc Lebovitz

Musical works for both chamber and large ensembles will be on the program at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, when the Illinois State University Percussion Ensembles present their fall concert in the Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall.

The ensembles are directed by David L. Collier, director of Percussion Studies in the School of Music. Admission is $6 for the general public, $5 for faculty-staff and $4 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the CPA box office from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays or by phone at (309) 438-2535.

The program will include "The Persistence of Past Chemistries" by Charles Griffin and Quartet No. 2 by Dave Hollinden. Both chamber works illuminate the intricacies that are possible between with small number of performers utilizing a myriad of instruments.

The ensemble will perform two works that feature a large percussion ensemble-"Portico" by Thomas Gauger and "Phage" by Pat Muchmore. "Phage" is a very stimulating, programmatic work that musically "portrays the infection of a bacterial cell by a T-4 bacteriophage." Muchmore depicts the various biological elements of absorption, morphogenesis, eclipse, induction, mutation and lysis through an incredibly diverse combination of percussion timbres.

Michael Malgoza of Orlando, Fla., a master of music degree candidate in percussion performance, will be the featured soloist in "Lahara" by Bob Becker. This work offers the musical cross-pollination of rudimental drumming and Indian musical.

Members of the Percussion Ensembles are Ricky Alegria, Ryan Borden, Matt Boze, Sarah Brillhart, Doug Ford, Aaron Kavelman, Patrick Keelan, Jared Kreuzer, Michael Malgoza, Sarah Mullin, Andrew Novak, Zach Oostema, Lawrence Rogers and Rachel Taylor.
