Vice President and Provost John Presley announced Thursday that Lon
Gordon, dean of Illinois State s College of Fine Arts, will begin a faculty
assignment at the University beginning in January 2008, following a leave of
absence, which begins immediately. In conjunction with his faculty
appointment, Gordon will also serve as Artist-In-Residence. Presley has
appointed Jim Major, director of the School of Music, as acting dean.
Gordon was named dean of the College of Fine Arts in 2004 after serving as a professor of Fine Arts and a Director of Development for the Performing Arts Center at University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Major joined the Illinois State Music faculty in 1995 as director of Choral Activities and became director of the School of Music in January 2000. He was conductor of the Madrigal Singers and artistic director of the Illinois State Madrigal Dinners for 11 years. Previously Major was on the Ohio State University Music faculty for 21 years, including nine years as chair of the Division of Music Education.
Major received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, M.A. from the University of Iowa, and B.M.E. degree from Western Illinois University. Major is originally from Meredosia, Illinois.
