Transpace Show to Highlight NAEA Chapter Efforts in Louisiana

Date: 3/20/07
Contact: Marc Lebovitz

The next Transpace art exhibition, Expectations to the Wind, opens Thursday, March 22, with an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. at the School of Art-funded exhibition space at 107 W. North St. in Uptown Normal. The show will continue through April 5 and is free and open to the public.

In January of this year, 15 students from Illinois State University s chapter of the National Art Education Association traveled to the Plaquemines Parish of Louisiana to aid in relief efforts.

In the midst of the still devastated area, they found that life was still moving on for the residents. Hope, playfulness and creativity were alive in the children they worked with. During their week of service, the chapter cleaned up the playground, created a makeshift gallery where the children created and displayed their artwork, and experienced a community still in need of service.

Returning from their work, they broadcasted their experiences by hosting a public discussion at ISU, a presentation in New York City and now an art exhibit in Uptown Normal. The areas affected by the hurricanes of late 2005 are still in urgent need of assistance. Through first hand accounts and photographs taken of their efforts, they work to spread knowledge of these needs and instigate further support for the communities of the South.

Expectations to the Wind promises to be both informative, interactive and engaging. The new Transpace Gallery web site can be found at www.transpacegallery.org
