Ruth Ann Lipic, director of the Radon Awareness Program at Illinois
State University is being honored for her work in educating the public about
the dangers posed by radon the home. Lipic will be presented with the
first-ever Excellence in Radon Award by the Illinois Emergency Management
Agency (IEMA) at the agency's annual Radon Networking Day, held on Illinois
State's campus on Wednesday, January 17.
Lipic is being recognized for her work with the McLean County Radon Task Force and Illinois State University. Over the past several years, she has worked to provide radon information and training to citizens, health professionals, radon professionals and state and county officials in Central Illinois.
The Radon Networking Day event, held as part of national Radon Action Month, will bring together public health officials, government officials and radon educators from across the state. Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that results from the radioactive decay of naturally occurring uranium in the soil. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has determined that it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the nation.
