Illinois State University s Kyle Ciani is the first recipient of the
Stan and Sandy Rives Excellence in Undergraduate Education Award. The award,
which will be presented at the Founders Day Convocation on Feb. 15 at 1
p.m., recognizes outstanding teaching or a significant contribution to the
undergraduate experience.
Stan Rives earned his bachelor s and master s degrees from Illinois State and was a member of the Illinois State University faculty and administration. The Stan and Sandy Rives Excellence in Undergraduate Education Award was established in honor of Stan s commitment to a high quality undergraduate program and for his contributions to Illinois State University as dean of Undergraduate Instruction.
Ciani, an assistant professor in History, received her bachelor s and master s degrees from the University of San Diego and her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. She specializes in the histories of women and gender and is working on a book about social welfare reform from 1850-1950 in Southern California.
As part of her nomination, History Chair Roger Biles said of Ciani: Dr. Ciani is a talented instructor who excels in classes at all levels. She is one of the rare teachers who can set high standards, demand rigor, push students to achieve their potential in the classroom and yet cultivate warm relationships with students.
