An exhibition of photographs and photo collages by the late
Elizabeth Stein will be shown from Sept. 8 to 24 at the University Galleries
at the Center for the Visual Arts at Illinois State University.
Stein, who was the primary art teacher at Bloomington High School for 26 years and who was a noted artist and philanthropist, died in May at the age of 99. Illinois State's School of Art has a scholarship fund in her name. A reception for the exhibition opening, which will include remembrances by her friends, will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at the galleries. Admission is free and open to the public.
Elizabeth Stein held bachelor and master's degrees from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago plus a degree from Vassar College. As a teacher at Bloomington High School, she was known for her innovative teaching methods, sharp wit, and demanding standards of excellence.
As an exhibiting photographer and member of the Kodaroamers and Bloomington Camera Clubs, Stein's subjects included thematic series such as ropes, eggs, wrapped structures, rocks, reflections, buildings and nature images from her many world travels. Her life was centered in charitable giving, with such local recipients including ISU's School of Art, McLean County Arts Center, Miller Park Zoo and Parklands Foundation at the Merwin Nature Preserve, where a trail had been dedicated in her honor.
