Illinois State University actuarial science student, T. J. Turner of
Bloomington is this year's recipient of the prestigious John Culver Woody
Scholarship from the Actuarial Foundation. This is the second year in a row
that an Illinois State student has been singled out to receive the Woody
Scholarship, with Carol Sorenson of Pekin receiving the honor last year.
The John Culver Wooddy Scholarship is awarded annually to college seniors
who have successfully completed at least one actuarial examination, rank in
the top quartile of their class and are nominated by a professor at their
school. Each year, selected students receive $2,000 scholarships from the
estate of John Culver Wooddy, a distinguished actuary who set aside funds to
provide scholarships to actuarial students.
Turner is also an Illinois State University Bone Scholar, Presidential
Scholar and State Farm Scholar. He served as president of the Illinois State
Actuarial Club.
The Actuarial Science Program at Illinois State is one of only 21 programs
worldwide, 12 of which are in the U.S., that are recognized as both advanced
undergraduate as well as graduate education and research programs by the
Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society. The University's
program is one of the fastest growing programs in the country, with about
100 undergraduate students and 25 graduate and postgraduate students.
